About

Chihkan Tower is not a temple — it is one of the best-known historic sites in Tainan's West Central District and a symbol of the city's spirit. It began as Fort Provintia, built by the Dutch, and today's Sea God Temple and Wenchang Pavilion stand tall on the foundations of that old Dutch fort. What makes visitors stop in the garden are the nine bixi — stone tortoise-dragons each bearing a stele — granted by the Qianlong Emperor to commemorate the suppression of the Lin Shuangwen Incident, and heavy with history. And in the Wenchang Pavilion, Kuixing holds his vermilion brush, making this historic site a place where many students also come to pray for success in their exams.

History

In 1653, the Dutch built Fort Provintia here. In 1661, Koxinga captured the fort and established Chengtian Prefecture, and Chihkan changed hands. Over the years that followed, earthquakes and uprisings left most of the fort in ruins; it was not until the Guangxu era of the Qing dynasty that the Sea God Temple, the Wenchang Pavilion, and the Wuzi Shrine were built one by one on the old site. Much of what you see today rests on that rebuilding, with the Dutch fort and the Chinese pavilions layered one over the other — a historic site, rare in Taiwan, where two architectural traditions meet.
