Chukou Longyin Temple

Fanlu Township, Chiayi County No. 1, Chukou Village, Fanlu Township, Chiayi County

About

Ji Gong, with his tattered hat, tattered fan and ragged robe, was once filmed at this very temple. According to the temple, both TTV's drama series Ji Gong and CTV's drama series Ji Gong the Living Buddha chose Chukou Longyin Temple in Fanlu, Chiayi, as a filming location. Longyin Temple is dedicated to Chan Master Ji Gong, the much-loved Living Buddha Ji Gong. It sits at the foot of Chukou Mountain on the way toward Alishan, within the Alishan National Scenic Area. The large stone panels on either side of the main entrance are carved with scenes of Ji Gong guiding people toward salvation, and the eaves are covered with auspicious dragons in cut-porcelain mosaic. The Yuantong Hall on the second floor enshrines Guanyin Bodhisattva, flanked by Manjushri and Samantabhadra. The temple has set lunar 10/3 as the day Chan Master Ji Gong attained the Way, and each year a birthday ceremony is held that morning during the chen hour. It is the liveliest day of the year.

History

According to the temple's history, from 1966 onward a local family named Qiu repeatedly dreamed of a deity in ragged clothes holding a tattered fan, who told them to carve a statue. In 1974 the Qiu family brought a divided spirit of Chan Master Ji Gong from Longfeng Temple in Jiaxian, Kaohsiung. That same year the statue was carved and enshrined in their home, and they began consulting the deity on behalf of devotees and helping people. In August 1990, construction of Longyin Temple began with almost no funds. At first it relied on devotees working as volunteers; only later was a management committee gradually formed. On October 24, 1991, the structure of the inner hall was largely complete, and Chan Master Ji Gong was installed there ahead of the rest. According to the temple, TTV's Ji Gong was filmed here in August 1995 and CTV's Ji Gong the Living Buddha in June 1997, and so this new temple at the foot of the mountain came to be seen on television by many people.
