About

One of Taiwan's most famous night markets grows right around a temple, and that is the remarkable sight at Keelung Dianji Temple. Located in Keelung's Ren'ai District, it is one of Keelung's three great temples and is dedicated to Kaizhang Shengwang, the Sacred King Who Opened Zhangzhou. The whole Keelung Miaokou Night Market spreads outward with the temple at its center, creating a scene where the night market sits inside the temple grounds and wraps around the temple. It is both a center of faith and a food hub known across Taiwan, with incense and crowds that never fade all year. Look up at the carved beams and painted rafters inside, too; don't spend all your time eating.

History

In 1875, the first year of the Qing Guangxu reign, the Lin Ben Yuan family of Banqiao donated land to help build Dianji Temple, dedicated to Kaizhang Shengwang, and it became the most important center of faith for the Zhangzhou people of the Keelung area. Dianji Temple was damaged in the Yiwei War of 1895, repaired in 1897, and renovated again after the war between 1957 and 1964. All along, its fate was tied closely to Keelung's: from a Qing-era treaty port to the international harbor it later became, the temple watched over every boom and change of Keelung Harbor. The temple still keeps stone pillars from the Tongzhi era and the "Kai Min Di Yi" stele, recording the pioneering stories of Keelung's early settlers. And the Miaokou Night Market around the temple has long been Keelung's most iconic tourist landmark.
