About
Every year on the twelfth day of the fourth lunar month, the whole of Kinmen turns out for a great parade, with floats and performance troupes stretching down the streets without end. This is 'Welcoming the City God in Kinmen', listed among 'Taiwan's 100 Religious Sights'. At the center of it all is Wudao City God Temple, dedicated to the City God (Chenghuang) and one of the main centers of faith in Kinmen. The temple has a three-bay, two-hall layout beneath an imposing double-eaved hip-and-gable roof. The day's festivities commemorate a piece of history: in 1680, the Kinmen garrison commander Chen Long moved the seat of government from Kinmen City to Houpu, and the City God moved with it, beginning more than three hundred years of incense in its new home.
History
The temple's roots go back to 1387, when Zhou Dexing, Marquis of Jiangxia, built the walled garrison town at Kinmen City and raised the Gudi City God Temple at the same time. In 1663, the Qing court's coastal evacuation policy left the original City God temple at Houpu in ruins. Then in 1680, Chen Long, the first garrison commander of Kinmen, moved the seat of government to Houpu, and the Gudi City God's incense was divided and brought to Ximen ward in Houpu, laying the foundation of Wudao City God Temple. In 1811, Wen Yingju and others raised more than 2,300 taels of silver to rebuild the temple, and a further expansion in 1994 brought it to its present size. Through all these moves and rebuildings, the bond between the City God and the town of Houpu has lasted more than three hundred years.
