About

Stand in front of Yilan Sanqing Temple and the whole of Meihua Lake spreads out below you. It is one of the few Taoist temples in Yilan where you can pray and look out over a lake at the same time. The temple is dedicated to the Three Pure Ones (Sanqing Daozu): Yuanshi Tianzun, Lingbao Tianzun and Daode Tianzun, and it is known as the head temple of Taoism in Taiwan. Set between the mountains and the water in quiet surroundings, Sanqing Temple is a well-known Yilan destination for both worship and sightseeing, just right if you want to pray and then take an easy walk.

History

In the 1970s, Sanqing Temple was built on a site beside Meihua Lake. The usual account is that the land was donated by the late county magistrate Chen Jindong. The temple looks out over the lake and the ring of mountains around it, and its main hall enshrines the Three Pure Ones. Every year on the fifteenth day of the second lunar month, the birthday of the Daode Tianzun, the temple holds its most important festival. Over time a full tourism area grew up around the temple, and the Meihua Lake bike path became a popular Yilan outing, making Sanqing one of the few temples where worship and leisure go hand in hand.
