Guan Sheng Di Jun (Lord Guan)
God of war, wealth, loyalty and righteousness

Guan Sheng Di Jun (Lord Guan)

Lord Guan | Guan Yu | God of War and Wealth

Introduction

Guan Gong — formally known as Guan Sheng Di Jun — started out as Guan Yu, a legendary general from China's Three Kingdoms period (around 220 AD). Red-faced, long-bearded, wielding a massive crescent blade, he was the living embodiment of loyalty and righteousness.

Fast forward two millennia, and he's become one of Taiwan's most versatile deities. Business owners pray to him for prosperity. Students pray for exam luck (Guan Yu was famously an avid reader of the Spring and Autumn Annals). Police officers pray for justice. Even organized crime figures pay their respects — because loyalty is loyalty, no matter which side of the law you're on.

Walk through any Taiwanese night market and you'll spot his red-faced statue behind the counter of more shops than you can count.

Fun fact: Guan Gong might be the only historical figure worshipped by three different religions simultaneously. Confucianism calls him the "Martial Sage," Taoism calls him "Emperor Guan," and Buddhism reveres him as the Sangharama Bodhisattva — that’s a spiritual résumé that spans three traditions.

Legend & Origin

The most iconic Guan Yu story is about choosing brotherhood over wealth.

After being captured by the warlord Cao Cao, Guan Yu was given every luxury imaginable — a high-ranking position, beautiful women, the legendary Red Hare horse. Cao Cao wanted him badly. Guan Yu accepted the horse (he was a warrior, after all — a good horse is a good horse), but his heart never wavered.

The moment he learned where his sworn brother Liu Bei was, he packed up, took his two sisters-in-law under his protection, and left. Cao Cao sent men to stop him at five different checkpoints. Guan Yu cut through every single one.

Think about it: power, money, comfort — all within reach. And he walked away from all of it to keep a promise he made in a peach garden. That's why people still worship him after two thousand years.

Worship Guide

What to pray for: Business success, integrity in dealings, exam luck, justice, protection from evil.

Three simple steps:

1. Prepare the "three offerings" (whole chicken, pork, whole fish) and three cups of tea

2. Light incense and state your name and request — be sincere (Guan Gong has zero patience for dishonesty)

3. Throw moon blocks to see if your prayer is accepted

Offerings: Three meats, longevity peaches, noodles, tea. Some devotees place a copy of the Spring and Autumn Annals on the altar as a tribute.

One key taboo: Don't pray to Guan Gong for shady business deals. He's the god of righteous wealth. If your intentions aren't honest, you're better off not asking.

Festivals

The most important festival is Guan Sheng Di Jun's birthday on the 24th day of the 6th lunar month. Major celebrations are held at temples across Taiwan, including Xingtian Temple and Tainan's Martial Temple.
