About
Among all of Taiwan's county-level City God temples, only one has a City God personally ennobled by an emperor: in 1875, the first year of his reign, the Guangxu Emperor conferred on the City God of Chiayi the title 'Marquis Suijing' (Suijing Hou) — a divine rank without equal. This old temple in Chiayi City's East District is thick with incense, and the building you see today was rebuilt in 1940, the fifteenth year of the Showa era. In 2015 it was upgraded to a National Monument, a witness to more than three hundred years of faith in Chiayi. The temple is rich in relics — Qing-dynasty plaques, stone steles, and wood carvings — and the City God's birthday on the second day of the eighth lunar month is one of Chiayi's grandest religious events.
History
This temple's story starts in the winter of 1715, when Zhou Zhongxuan, the magistrate of Zhuluo County, donated his own salary to found this City God temple. In 1764 work began on a rebuilding, finished the following year. Its true moment of glory came in 1875: the Guangxu Emperor ennobled the Chiayi City God as 'Marquis Suijing,' making him the only county-level City God in Taiwan to receive an honorific title from an emperor. The present temple was completed in 1940, the fifteenth year of the Showa era, preserving the building craft of the Japanese period. In 2015 it was upgraded to a National Monument.
