Guanziling Huowangye Temple

In 1902, the Japanese developed the Guanziling hot springs and set up an image of Acala above the spring source to pray for safety. Later the Japanese took the statue and stone tablet away, and local people pooled money to build this temple, modeling a new statue on the original Acala. From then on he was called Huowangye, the Fire King. Each year the hot spring operators choose an incense master (luzhu) by divination to lead the offerings, praying that the springs keep flowing, and he became the guardian of the Guanziling hot springs. In recent years, events held by the Tainan City Government and the Siraya National Scenic Area Administration have referred to him as "Acala (Huowangye)." In the summer of 2022, the Siraya National Scenic Area Administration held a float festival timed to Huowangye's birthday, and in the summer of 2026 it held an Acala-themed street parade. The Tainan City Government Tourism Bureau, for its part, schedules the Acala night procession for the opening of the hot spring food festival each year. The wisdom king the Japanese brought here a century ago now walks the hot spring streets with the residents every year.
