About

Most Guan Di temples enshrine a gilded statue, but Jiaoxi Sietian Temple has a 'Silk Guan Gong', an image of Guan Sheng Di Jun built up layer upon layer from silk thread. It is one of the oldest Guan Di temples in northern Taiwan, dedicated to Guan Sheng Di Jun (Guan Gong), and one of the most important centers of faith in Yilan. On the thirteenth day of the first lunar month, the 'Turtle King' rite fills the temple with noise and crowds: worshippers ask Guan Di for a longevity turtle and return a turtle of the same kind the following year. If you want to pray to Guan Gong for your career, for justice, or for peace, this is the stop to make on your way into Yilan.

History

In the summer of 1804, Lin Yingshi, Lin Gurui, Lin Yuzi, Lin Tianlang and others from Zhangzhou brought a branch of Guan Di's incense from the Dongshan Guandi Temple to Taiwan and built a temple in Jiaoxi. Jiaoxi was then the main route for settlers heading into Yilan, and for the Han migrants of Kavalan, struggling to clear new land, Guan Di was the presence they could count on. The temple was expanded and repaired many times from the Qing dynasty through the Japanese era, and a large-scale reconstruction after the founding of the Republic gave it the imposing form it has today. Many Guan Di temples now regard Sietian Temple as their ancestral temple. Its festivals in the first and sixth lunar months are grand occasions, and the temple itself is a page in the story of how the Lanyang Plain was settled.
