About

In the Dacheng Hall of Taipei Confucius Temple, you will not find a single statue. This Confucius temple in Taipei's Datong District follows the Confucian teaching of not worshipping idols, so the hall honors Confucius, the Supreme Sage and Foremost Teacher, with spirit tablets alone. Built in the Minnan style, every brick and pillar feels upright and solemn. The best reason to make a special trip is the ceremony honoring Confucius (the Shidian rite) held every year on Teachers' Day, September 28. By custom the mayor serves as chief officiant, young performers dance the ancient yi dance, and Confucius is honored with ancient rites. It is one of Taipei's most important celebrations of Confucian culture.

History

Taipei's first Confucius temple (Wen Temple) began construction in 1880, the sixth year of the Qing Guangxu reign, and was completed in 1884. Sadly, it was torn down in 1907, during Japanese rule. The temple you see today was rebuilt at the initiative of Taipei's local gentry in 1925. They brought in Wang Yi-shun, the master craftsman from Quanzhou who had designed Longshan Temple, and the work was not completed until 1939. It too is built in the Minnan style, and it pairs beautifully with Dalongdong Baoan Temple just across Dalong Street. One Confucian and one Taoist, the two buildings together form a cluster of traditional architecture in Dalongdong.
