About
Xinzhuang Wu Temple is said to be the oldest temple to Guan Di, Lord Guan, in the Taipei Basin. This temple in Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City, is also a municipal historic site. It witnessed the days when Xinzhuang was a thriving port crowded with sails, and it still holds many precious old plaques and stone inscriptions, making it an important place for anyone tracing Xinzhuang's history.
History
In 1760, the 25th year of the Qianlong reign, Hu Zhuoyou donated the land and the monk Zhixiu of Xinzhuang's Ciyou Temple oversaw the building of Wu Temple, dedicated to Lord Guan, the God of War. Xinzhuang was then a busy port and trading town in northern Taiwan, its harbor thick with masts, and Wu Temple was where merchants prayed for good business and held one another to loyalty and honest dealing. In 1853, during armed clashes between Zhangzhou and Quanzhou settlers, the temple was badly damaged; in 1868 it was rebuilt with the three-hall layout it has today. Qing-dynasty stone tablets, old plaques, and stone lions remain inside, quiet witnesses to Xinzhuang's long change from a bustling port to a modern town.
